The flag was registered by the Flag Institute in May 2011 as a traditional county flag and was first flown the following month at Lewes Castle. The flag represents the whole of Sussex and is based on the traditional emblem of Sussex, six gold martlets on a blue field. This emblem was first used in 1610, as the emblem of the Kingdom of the South Saxons. Today it is used by many Sussex organisations, such as Sussex County Cricket Club and Sussex County Football. Celebrate Sussex Day/ St Richard's Day on 16th June with a Sussex county flag from Midland flags. East Sussex and West Sussex flags are also available.
