Flag description.
Originally adopted on November 16th 1959, it was changed in 1975 and then restored back again on August 1st 1990. The Benin flag features a vertical green bar on the hoist taking up approximatly 2/5 of the flag and then two horizontal bars of yellow and red. The yellow and green symbolise the Northern Savanas and red symolises the blood shed by those who fought for Dahomey. Yet others believe that the colours are to honour the nation of Ethiopia, the oldest independent country still not yet a part of the African union.
